Edward Whelan Feb. 26, 1943 – Apr. 11, 2024
“Ed” was born on Feb 26, 1943, to Winifred & Edward Whelan in Brooklyn, NY. His 3 siblings soon joined the family, and they were raised in loving, Catholic home that set his life pattern to always do the best for people.
After graduating from Erasmus H.S at the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he trained to be a weatherman. He served on different ships but mainly on The Boxer. He enjoyed his naval time & always talked about how good the food was.
When he was honorably discharged, he returned to Brooklyn. There decided to join the NY Police Department & patrolled Brooklyn, The Bronx, and NY City.
He also met Maureen Cowan & they married soon afterward. They had 5 beautiful children. The family moved out of the city to Blooming Grove, NY where they raised their family. He Continued “walking the beat” for 17 yrs. and retired from the job with an injury.
Searching for his next career to support his family, he decided upon nursing. He attended Empire State College and Orange County Community College, graduating with degrees: Associate in science, and Applied Science. Continuing his education at Empire State, he graduated with a V=Bachelor of Science in 1991 & was a registered nurse in Psyche at Chilton Memorial Hospital in NJ.
After all his children graduated H.S., he & Maureen divorced and he moved to Great Gorge Ski Area in Wantage, NJ. Throughout this time, he continued his nursing career for 15 years helping those who needed to find their way back to normal.
In 1996, he met Susanne Stout, also living in Wantage. They shared many interests: travel, Broadway shows, concerts, their Faith, walking, dining out & love of animals. Together they decided that when they retired, they would move to FL. In 2004 they bought a beautiful home in Spring Hill & moved there permanently in 2005. They married there on Jan. 15, 2008 & continued their love & friendship.
Ed was an active member at St. Frances Cabrini, and St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Catholic Church where he served as sacristan and Eucharistic Minister bringing Communion to the local hospitals. He always attended first Friday and Saturday masses & received.
Ed passed away at home Apr. 11, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Susanne; 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
