My siblings (Sharon, Susan, James) and I grew up on Lombard, a couple of houses down the street from the Pohls. We were the two largest families in that sweet little paradise of a neighborhood, four kids in each family. Whereas our family was three girls and then a boy, the Pohls were three boys and then a girl and our respective ages more or less matched, kid to kid. I have lovely memories of sitting on some front stoop or another with the Pohls on a summer evening just chatting, or joining in with them to play endless games of baseball in the street or hide and seek up and down the alley. My mom, Betty, loved the Pohl boys, who would magically appear (doubtless sent by their wonderful mom, Kaye) when she needed help with yard work or other tasks requiring muscle and a happy temperament. Tom was the oldest of the three boys and one of the oldest kids in the neighborhood as well. He was a a role model for us younger kids and, when he joined the Peace Corps, nothing less than a hero to many. We followed the news of his time in Latin America, letter by letter, with admiration. I have no doubt that his model of public service to others inspired as well--I know it did me, for which I am so grateful. He grew from being a good kid into being a fine man. I know that I am not the only Lombard kid who, upon hearing of Tom's passing will remember him with joy and pride, mourn his loss, and send prayers of comfort and hope to his wife and children, and with special fondness, to John, Jim, and Mary. May the memory of him bless us all. With deepest sympathy, Ann Millin.
