George Cowan Smith was born in Killeen, Texas on July 19, 1952 and passed away peacefully in Spring Hill Florida on September 22, 2022. He bravely fought liver cancer for over a year. He is survived by his wife, Susan, son, Raymond, brothers Richard and Larry, brother-in-law James Humphreys, niece Sara and her husband Nathan, and niece Rachel, her husband Robert, and children Rory and Robyn.
He was a generous and loving husband and father. His passion was youth and animals. He worked as a Vocational Agriculture Teacher in Texas and New Mexico for 35 years. Most of that time was spent at Keller High School in Keller, Texas where he lived. He graduated from Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas –part of Texas A&M University. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Agriculture and developed and taught a Special Education Agriculture Program at Keller High School. He was an FFA advisor and his students participated in many stock shows. He was loved and respected by his colleagues, students and their parents. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brothers, friends and son.
He was the consummate Southern Gentleman, striving to show love and compassion to those in his life. He touched the lives of his colleagues, friends and students with his quiet, gentle personality and subtle, unexpected wit. People who did not know him were just friends he had not yet met. He had a brilliant, active mind which helped him guide others as they made important decisions about their future.
He loved to play golf and retired to Spring Hill Florida to live in an active adult golf country club community. He tried to play every day. He loved country and western music and the Dallas Cowboys and tried to convert many of his non-Texas friends into devotees of both.
A Celebration of Life will be planned for friends and family to say their final goodbyes.
