On Saturday, January 14, 2023, Gloria Eusibia Sutherland Scott, loving Mother, Sister, Aunt, and Friend, passed away peacefully in her Florida home at the blessed age of 94.
Gloria was born in New York City on November 20, 1928, to Robert and Miriam Sutherland. Gloria raised five beautiful daughters: Vivian, Lisa, Karen, Janice, Charisse. She pursued a career in nursing and became a Registered Nurse, practicing for over 35 years. A real live modern day ‘Florence Nightingale’ she was! She retired as a Nurse Supervisor in 1997 and moved to Springhill, Florida where she established new residency.
Gloria had a passion for words and word games. She was an avid scrabble player and would stay up until the wee hours of the morning playing with her best friend, Doris Jay. In addition, she loved playing ‘Bingo’ and enjoyed a good game of cards with her loyal “card buddies”, Alma, Dorothy, and Lottie! Gloria had a collection of cards from around the world, as she also loved to travel. Aruba was her favorite place to go. Solving crossword puzzles kept Gloria’s mind sharp and her many trips to Las Vegas became her heart’s delight, as the casinos were her playgrounds.
Gloria was an ardent music lover who played the piano and loved to sing and dance. Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra were two of her favorite artists. She once sang with Eartha Kitt, with whom she went to elementary school, and even knew Billy Holiday. She was a true Harlem native who frequented such clubs as The Savoy Ballroom and The Cotton Club where she danced the ‘Lindy Hop/Jitterbug’ to her heart’s content. Gloria’s interests in music also revolved around Opera and classical music. Gloria held season tickets to The Met Opera house, frequented the opera regularly with her best friend, Doris, and introduced her children to a life-long love of music. There was a fine-tuned working piano that Gloria owned in every one of her homes, and it was important to her that we all learned to play. During holidays, birthdays, or just plain old run of the mill fun, our family would gather around the piano for sing-a-longs or dress up to show-off talents that always got attention from huge applauds and adoration. Mommy was our number one fan! While Gloria's children did not actively seek careers in the Arts & Entertainment, her musical genes dominated in her grandchildren, Tyenne, India and Maya. Each one studied classical music in world renowned music conservatories, carrying on the legacy of their grandmother as classically trained singers, performers and musicians; also making a name for themselves in the industry. Gloria loved to play and listen to the music of many classical composers. Beethoven's "Fur Elise" was her favorite.
Gloria was preceded in death by her mother Miriam, father Robert, daughter Lisa, stepson Artie, brother Lincoln and his wife Connie, brother-in-law Vincent Roberts, niece and nephew Jeanne and Ritchie, stepsisters Barbara and Pauline, and stepbrothers Keith, Vincent, and Everett.
Gloria is survived by her beloved sister, Vivian Roberts; daughters Vivian, Karen (Terrance), Janice (Wade), and Charisse; grandchildren Stanley, Reynold, Renee, Ivy, Keith, Dawn, Tyenne, Vincent, India, and Maya; 18 great grandchildren and 11 great-great grandchildren, with one on the way. Gloria’s lineage includes a host of nieces and nephews who affectionately call her “Aunt Glo” - each of whom she loved dearly. Lastly, Gloria is survived by her loyal family pet, Benga, who lay by her side in her final hour.
Gloria was known for her quick wit, warmth and loving spirit that embraced everyone as ‘Family’. Gloria was full of life and loved keeping up with the times. We have all been blessed beyond measure with so much love and great memories that we will cherish forever!
Gloria, “Mommy, Mom-mom, Ma, Mam-sab, Mother, Aunt Glo, Aunt Gloria, ‘FA’ (Favorite Aunt)", we honor you; we treasure you; we love you; and we will miss you dearly.
