John Sabatini Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of the Honorable John A. Sabatini, Esq. on July 5, 2025. John was born in Pawtucket, RI on September 21, 1945, the son of Angelo Sabatini and Helen Sabatini (Bobola). John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He married his best friend, Dr. Midge Sabatini on June 28, 1981 and together they built a life filled with laughter, love and deep companionship.

John graduated from Saint Raphael Academy, Pawtucket, RI (1963), Providence College (1967), and Catholic University Law School, Washington, D.C. He worked as a practicing attorney in private practice over 25 years in Pawtucket, RI. He retired in 2017 as Administrator of the State of Rhode Island’s Worker’s Compensation Court.

John proudly served in the United States Army and is a Vietnam War Veteran. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club, Pawtucket, RI, and was also an official Kentucky Colonel serving over 25 years.

Additionally, John was a Rhode Island State Senator serving Pawtucket and Central Falls, Rhode Island for 12 years. He built a superb record of public service as an elected official, serving the people of the 39th Senate District and the entire state of Rhode Island as Chairman of the Senate Labor Committee; Chairman of the Workers' Compensation Advisory Council; and as National Commissioner of Uniform State Laws. As an accomplished veteran of workers' compensation reforms, John demonstrated exceptional leadership in recommending the historic 1992 Workers' Compensation Reform Act. In recognition of his outstanding leadership, guidance and public service, RI Governor Bruce Sundlun proclaimed December 15, 1992 John Sabatini Recognition Day.

For 35 years, John enjoyed vacationing in Aruba with his wife, family and friends. And was an avid spectator of baseball and golf. John was known for his warm heart, calming spirit, witty humor and an amazing ability to make everyone feel welcome. He made friends wherever he went. As a father, John was a guiding light, always there to offer advice, a listening ear and unconditional love. He was also a proud grandfather and great grandfather. They brought him immeasurable joy.

John was a devoted family man and respected member of his community. He touched the lives of many with his generosity, humility and genuine care for others. He had a remarkable ability to bring people together, and his presence will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

John is survived by his devoted wife, Dr. Midge Sabatini, his daughters, Kelly DeCastro (Steven) and the late Tracey McGuire; his grandchildren, Felicia McGuire, Chasity Mattiello (Nicholas Jr.) and Sophie DeCastro; great grandchildren Madison LaMontagne and Nicholas Mattiello lll.
