John M. “Doc” Savage, age 60, passed away March 18, 2026, His passing leaves a deep sense of loss in the hearts of those who knew him.
John proudly served his country as a 20-year veteran of the United States Air Force, dedicating two decades to the duty, honor and service. After retiring from the Air Force, he continued his commitment to serving his country by spending the remainder of his career with the Department of Defense, where he worked until his retirement in 2024. Even after retiring, John remaining active and connected to his community, becoming a part of the Downing Funeral Home family, where he worked part-time and formed meaningful bonds with the people he served alongside.
A true Ohioan, John lived in the Cleveland, Ohio area for nearly his entire life, carrying with him the pride, grit and loyalty that defined the community he loved. In the final year of his life, he moved to Brooksville, Florida, where he enjoyed a quieter pace while staying connected to the people and passions that mattered most to him.
John was a devoted Ohio State supporter and a loyal Cleveland Browns season ticket holder. He also held a deep affection for his alma mater, St. Joseph High School, where many of his lifelong values and friendships first took shape. Outside of his love for football, John was an avid golfer, finding joy, peace, and camaraderie on the course.
He deeply valued the people in his life. John loved his friends wholeheartedly and cherished the bonds he built over the years – friendships filled with laughter, loyalty, and countless shared moments.
He is survived by his loving sister, Jean Gammiere, his brother, Jim Savage Jr., and his seven nieces, all of whom will forever carry a memory in their hearts. John was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Erin Marie, who blessed him with two grandsons, Aiden and Gannon, both of whom were great sources of pride and joy in his life.
A catholic Mass honoring John’s life will be held on June 6, 2026 at St. John Cantius Church in Cleveland, Ohio, at 10:00 a.m.
John’s presence, humor, and warmth will be deeply missed. His legacy lives on in the stories shared, the traditions he cherished, and the love he gave so freely.
