Lawrence Joseph Fitzgerald, 88, passed away peacefully on August 16, 2023 following a lengthy illness, surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Elaine Fitzgerald. They eloped on December 30, 1955 and have spent the last 67 years together.
Larry (Fitzi) was born on November 8, 1934 in Bronx, New York. He spent his youth in New Jersey, then relocated the family to Maine and finally, happily, retired to sunny Florida in 1997.
As a young man, Fitzi was an accomplished athlete. He was inducted into the Princeton High School Hall of Fame for his skills in basketball and set a long standing record at the University of Maine in javelin. He was an accomplished golfer winning numerous competitions and getting three hole-in-ones. Fitzi was also an accomplished wood carver, creating dozens of beautiful birds over the years.
Fitzi was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and an entrepreneur, creating and owning several businesses focused on security, throughout his life. While in retirement, Fitzi was active on many committees and boards, bringing his lifelong knowledge of safety and security to make improvements to his Timber Pines community. He was also a longtime member of the Lions Club and was a 32° Shriner.
Fitzi loved to travel and was known for his great attempts at speaking the local language, wherever he was. He enjoyed joyrides on fire trucks in his youth, telling jokes and a nice glass of Jameson at the end of the day with friends and family.
Fitzi is survived by his wife, Elaine; his son, Larry Fitzgerald and wife, Theresa; his son, Kevin Fitzgerald and wife, Cristina; his four grandsons - Sean Fitzgerald, Reilly Fitzgerald and his wife Ryee, Cyrus Fitzgerald and James Fitzgerald; two nephews and his best friend from childhood, Buck (Charles) Osborn with whom he spent countless hours hunting, fishing, telling jokes and laughing during their long friendship.
A private graveside service for the family will be held at Bushnell National Cemetery. A celebration of life to share joyful memories of Fitzi will be held in early November.
The family would like to give special thanks to Chapters Health Hospice for their incredible, tender care and support.
