Obituary

Marcella (Marcy) A. Meehan, of Hudson, Fla. and Brentwood, NY. passed away on May 11, 2022, at the age of 80.

Marcy was born on February 3, 1942, in Manhattan, NY to Patrick and Marcella G. (Brennan) Smith and was raised in the Bronx. Her family was one of the earliest residents of Parkchester, the largest housing complex in the country at the time. Marcy spent much of her youth at “The Oval” (Parkchester's historic central fountain) and would regale her children with stories of her athletic prowess and awards.

Marcy was a gregarious child with a personality that attracted everyone. Her outgoing and kind disposition endeared her to many throughout her life and no one was ever a stranger for long. Even on a short trip to the store Marcy would make friends with people online and know their life story by the time she left.

As a young adult Marcy was employed by the NY Telephone Company. She met her future husband, Pat, on the subway during their daily commutes to work. Ever the extrovert, she made the first move and approached him. She remained employed at the phone company during their courtship and subsequent marriage, and up until the birth of their daughter.

A few years later, now with two young children, Marcy and Pat moved to Long Island to raise their family. After many years of walking to stores pulling her children in their red Radio Flyer wagon, Marcy became an expert at navigating all of the backroads and side streets of the neighborhood as she learned to drive and obtained her first driver’s license.

Marcy returned to work as her children grew up and was employed by the local school district, and then for many years in government with Suffolk County. She worked with the County Executive, the Health Department, and Women’s Services and retired after 23 years of service to the people of Suffolk County. Marcy was active in various organizations within the school district and in local government and dedicated herself to raising her children and playing an active role in their sports and extra-curricular activities.

Marcy will also be remembered by her family and friends for her thoughtfulness and generosity. There was never just one Irish soda bread or one tray of stuffed shells to be made—there were at least a dozen—and all were delivered to her friends and acquaintances before she would lovingly make an extra for home.

Marcella is survived by her devoted husband of 57 years, Patrick, and her daughter Deirdre and son, Sean. Additional survivors include her cousins Eileen (Michael) Weber, Diane (Serge) Ogranovitch, and John Patrick “JP” (Geraldine) McGuirk. She is predeceased by her cousin Joan (Brian) Madden.

Mass will be held on Monday, May 16th, 2022, at St. Theresa's Catholic Church, Spring Hill at 10am, with private cremation to follow. A memorial service will be held in New York at a future date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to your favorite charity.
