Maria Conroy Obituary

Maria Sarah Conroy, 81, of Brooksville, FL, passed away on December 20th, 2023, after suffering a Hemorrhagic Stroke. Maria was born on May 26th, 1942, to Theodora and Erasto Chacon in Mogote, Colorado. After graduating from Antonito High School in 1960, she joined the Navy in 1963. She served in Bainbridge Maryland, Barber’s Point, Hawaii, Newport, Rhode Island, Lakehurst New Jersey, and Brooklyn New York. In 1968, she met John Peter Conroy, at the local Navy Exchange in Brooklyn, New York. In 1970, they got married and moved to Key West, Florida, where they had one daughter, Jean Patricia, in 1971. In March 1973, she moved to Sardinia, Italy where her husband was stationed on the USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS16). It was the first time that the Navy allowed dependents on the same ship to head to a new duty station. The ship arrived in Sardinia after 21 days (about 3 weeks) at sea. In 1974, her family toured Europe visiting Switzerland, Germany, France, Austria, and Italy. After touring Europe, they returned to live in Norfolk, Virginia. Shortly thereafter they relocated to Naval Air Station in Lakehurst, New Jersey eventually settling in Toms River, New Jersey. In 1987, she moved once again to Key West Florida where they spent 14 years. Her final move was to Brooksville, Florida in 2002 to be closer to her daughter, son-in-law and eventually her grandson, Cam O’Connor, who was born in 2007. She enjoyed working at the golf club, crafting, crocheting, cooking, baking, and quilting. Her biggest joy was helping to take care of her grandson, Cam, as an infant and toddler, watching him grow up and spoiling him as much as possible. Maria is predeceased by her parents and one brother, Erasto Jr. She is survived by her husband, John Conroy; her sister, Esther (Doug) White; her brother Amarante (Joe) (Barbara) Chacon; her one child, Jean O’Connor; her son-in-law, Keith O’Connor, and her one grandchild, Cam O’Connor. She also leaves behind 16 nieces and nephews and 13 great nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly.
