Marlene Renaud Obituary

It is with deep sorrow yet fond remembrance, we announce the peaceful passing of Marlene Rachel Renaud, who departed from this world suddenly on March 22, 2024, in the comfort of her home in Hernando Beach, Florida. She was the loving wife of the late Ronald R. Renaud, with whom she shared 45 years of marriage.  Born on March 19, 1950, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, daughter of the late Everett Smith and Lilla (Bowers) Smith. She was predeceased by her aunts Celia Spittle and Blanche Beatrice Bowers Auld, and her Nephew, George M. Smith. Among those who cherish her memory are her brother George E. Smith, daughter, Nicole Demas, Stepdaughter, Tammy Gagnon (Ray), niece, Heather Haggerty (Thaddeus) great-niece Holly Haggerty, and great-nephew, Timothy Haggerty as well as the light of her life, her granddaughter, Avalon.

Raised in New Bedford, Massachusetts, Marlene’s passion for education was evident early on in her academic pursuits and extracurricular endeavors. Graduating with honors from New Bedford High School, she shone as a majorette. To further her education, she attended Bridgewater State College, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in education, relishing the opportunity to explore Europe during her studies. She put her degree to good use, having devoted her passion and creativity to her 37 – year career as a special needs second grade teacher, inspiring countless students with her innovative approach in the classroom before her retirement in 2007.

Beyond her professional life, Marlene found joy in a multitude of hobbies. Whether boating with her beloved husband of 45 years as his “#1 first mate,” woodworking alongside him, or indulging in activities like painting, reading, and bunko, Marlene embraced life with a radiant smile and infectious enthusiasm. From dancing around the house to lively Zumba sessions with her friends at the local YMCA, Marlene’s love for music was a testament to her vibrant spirit. As a social butterfly, she delighted in entertaining friends and cherished moments spent with family during holidays and various vacations.

Marlene’s spiritual journey was guided by her steadfast commitment to Grace Episcopal Church in New Bedford where she lent her voice to the choir and served on the vestry.

In celebrating Marlene’s life, let us remember her boundless love, unwavering kindness, infectious smile, and zest for life. Her engaging presence brightened the lives of all who were fortunate to know her. Her legacy will forever resonate in our hearts and will live on through her family and many sassy, fun-loving girlfriends.
