Nicholas Edward Scunziano, known as “Nick” or Fireman Nick, was an incredible man who valued family and was a proud American. He passed away Monday, May 22, 2023 at Bayonet Point Hospital in Hudson FL at the age of 84. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 10, 1939, Nick was the only child to Edward and Gertrude Scunziano. Nick grew up in Brooklyn, NY where he met the love of his life Helen and moved to Rocky Point, NY in 1969 where the raised five daughters. He had been a resident of Spring Hill for 26 years, coming from Rocky Point, NY.
Nick was appointed to the FDNY on April 7th, 1962 and served as a Fireman in Ladder 111 until his promotion to LT in 1976 where he then served as a LT in 105 until his retirement. Nick was decorated over 20 times during his 22 year career for bravery and outstanding service until his career was cut short by injuries sustained in the line of duty.
Post retirement he remained active with the Knight of Columbus as well as remaining active in ongoing firefighting education and mentorship until he relocated to Florida. While residing in Timber Pines Nick became active in honoring all of the first responders from 9/11 and Veterans that fought for the freedoms we continue to enjoy today. He was also active with his fellow retired first responders and socialized often with them at various gatherings and will be sorely missed.
Nick is survived by his wife Helen; 5 daughters, Joanie and husband Ted Turner, Lisa and husband Lenny Caruso, Christine and husband Bill Staker, Debbie Ceschini and companion Steve and Tracey and husband Glen Joline; twelve grandchildren Nick, Mike, Lisa, Michael, Brian, Matt, Danny, Kayla, Paul, Andrew, Jessica and Alexa; and six great grandchildren, Payton, Charli, Capri, Frankie, Cameron and Nora and an extended family of many other loved ones.
Nick, Dad, Poppy will be missed by everyone who had the honor of knowing him. The legacy he left behind will be cherished and remembered with love.
A Celebration of his Life will be held on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Downing Funeral Home, 1214 Wendy Court, Spring Hill, FL from 3-7 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 12:30 PM, Friday, May 26, 2023 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Spring Hill, FL
